Rhythm Enthusiasts, this one is for you!
This is not a drum workshop, it is truly a rhythm workshop designed to help you tap into your inner groove, to empower you to step outside the box(es) that ensnare us and make us believe we aren't deeply, historically, soulfully rhythmic beings - you will feel inspired by the end of this workshop offered by my friends Shasta and Brian, believe me!
Planned for March 23 - 24, the workshop will take place over one evening and one full day. There will be the option to attend only the Friday night to whet your appetite (and then you might decide to stay on for the Saturday...or not...). Venue will likely be the Fallen Alders on Royston Road, cost TBA but will be under $100. At this point, I'm putting out feelers to see who is interested. We need a minimum number to run the workshop.
According to Shasta and Brian's website, Ta Ke Ti Na is a musical group process that uses rhythm, sound and movement. The Ta Ke Ti Na process creates an opportunity for participants to experience a new way of learning based on their own timing and readiness, using the body [and voice] as their instrument. It works equally well for professional musicians and beginners, allowing all people to access their innate ability to express and embody rhythm. Please go to

Drum making opportunity
My friend Robin Shackleton of Sylvan Temple drums (many of you are playing drums made by him!) out in Errington will be offering drum making workshops again soon. Some students have already expressed an interest, and I encourage you to contact Robin directly if you'd like to make your own djembe! The price is very, very reasonable - and Robin is a beautiful soul who will help you put your own energy into your special instrument, allowing you to choose colour of string, type of wood and size. 2nd 2012 session coming up!

The next 6 week session of drumming classes is fast approaching!
Please register for the CRA drumming classes by phoning 250.338 1000.
Neither the beginners nor the intermediate class is full (as some of our members were told mistakenly!). The session runs from Feb 20 - Mar 26, and most likely there will only be an intermediate class as there are no registrants for beginners as of yet.
For the Fallen Alders drummers, I plan to run both a beginners and an advanced session. Same dates Feb 20 - Mar 26. I will then take a two week break with my kids (spring break). FYI: beginners normally take a beginners session anywhere from 2 - 5 times before they feel ready to advance to the intermediate or advanced stage. Please feel free to chat with me about "graduating"! Generally, as a beginners class advances together, they morph into an intermediate level class together - so there is something to be said for a class "sticking together"...
Class times have not changed:
CRA Intermediates at the Upper Native Sons, Mondays 11:45 - 12:45 pm.
Fallen Alders Beginners 5:15 - 6:15 pm and Advanced 6:30 - 7:30 pm.
Some students have asked for a dun dun (bass) drum workshop; watch upcoming emails for details! Glad to hear more folks are interested in the duns!

Final Drumming Announcement for beginning of 2012!!

Final arrangements for upcoming drumming classes are as follows (advanced Fallen Alders folks pay particular attention to TIME please):

Beginners: Mondays, 5;15 - 6:15 pm at the Fallen Alders only; register at the door please (NO beginners class through the CRA this session)

Intermediate: Mondays, 11:45 - 12:45 pm at the Upper Native Sons Hall; register through CRA 250 338 1000

Advanced: Mondays, 6:30 - 7:30 pm at the Fallen Alders; register at the door please.
Advanced students please note the time change back to the original as the beginners class is running just before you.

Thanks everyone, for your patience and understanding while timetable decisions were being made!

New for this session: anyone registered in any of my classes is welcome to drop in at another class in the same session for 1/2 of the regular drop in fee (thanks Ron for that idea!) Also, if you miss a class, you are more than welcome to make it up by attending another class at a different time and/or venue, as long as it is within the same session (ie make up classes cannot be held over to a new session).

Upcoming Drum Classes

The next two sessions of drumming will happen on the following dates:
Jan 9 - Feb 13
Feb 20 - Mar 26
Intermediate classes through the CRA (upper Native Sons, Mondays 11:45 - 12:45 pm) and advanced classes at the Fallen Alders (Mondays, 6 - 7 pm) will definitely be happening. I have not had enough interest in the Monday evening beginners class at the Fallen Alders, so that will likely not run this session. I will keep you posted (if it does run, advanced time will change to 6:30 - 7:30 as beginners would be the usual 5:15 - 6:15 pm); as for the Monday morning beginners class, there are currently only 5 registered, so this class will only run if more people sign up.
If you are still thinking of joining any of these classes, please let me know - and register asap for any CRA classes so that they have the proper numbers!

Fundraiser a huge success!

The Solstice Dance/Drum Potluck raised $551.25 with 55 + folks contributing to sending a lucky child to a traditional Tibetan school in the Amdo Region of Tibet. Jessica had the whole hall shaking and grooving, our wonderful dun dun players laid down a most amazing back beat and the drum circle energy was powerful indeed! Not to mention the fact that the food was delicious, and I do love a potluck!
Thanks to everyone who came out to make merry - as far as I'm concerned, that was my Christmas "family dinner" and the best gift anyone could receive for the holidays. I feel truly blessed! Hope to see you all drumming in the New Year...

Upcoming Rhythm, Drum and Dance Event/Fundraiser

Mark your calendars! You won't want to miss this one!
Monica's annual Solstice Drum & Potluck event will look a little different this year - thanks to friend and colleague Jessica Wittman, not only will we be drumming, eating and making merry but we will be dancing as well! Jessica is a popular Zumba instructor here in the Valley, and this year the two of us are teaming up to turn the Solstice Event into an even larger fundraiser than usual.
In past years at Solstice gatherings, Monica's drumming students and families have contributed at the door to providing clean water for an entire village in Tanzania and to supporting families' urban farming efforts in South Africa. This year Monica and Jessica are hoping to raise enough funds to send a Tibetan child to a traditional Tibetan school, and to supply this student with all of the winter clothing and educational needs he/she will have for a year - please go to www.taracafeproject.ca FMI. Since I put the call out for this fundraising effort a number of weeks ago, some of you have already generously donated to the cause (if you would like to be recognized by name when we make the donation to the Tara Cafe Project, please donate by cheque made out to "The Tara Cafe Project") - if you can't make it to the Solstice Event, please consider donating nevertheless: you can even donate in someone else's name and make it a wonderful Christmas present!
As usual, to cut back on our environmental footprint, please bring your own cutlery, cup & plate, as well as enough finger food goodies to feed a rather large group of hungry movers and shakers, warm clothes in case we make it outdoors for a spiral dance (a candle in a jar wouldn't hurt either), and loads of good cheer! We will drum and dance for about an hour, and enjoy each other's company while loading up on delicious calories for the the other hour (by the way: if I haven't mentioned it before, I DO love a potluck! )!!
This event takes place Monday, December 19th from 6 - 8 pm at the Fallen Alders Hall on Royston Road, and is a family event.

Sadly there are not enough committed to Monday evening beginners lessons, so we will try again in the new year but for now no beginners class at the Fallen Alders. There may be a beginners class running Monday mornings as well, 10:15 - 11:15 am at the Tsolum Building in Lewis Park, dependent on the number of people who sign up by Friday November 4th. Tibetan Musician Jamyang Yeshi to visit the Comox Valley

A couple of years ago I had the great pleasure of hearing Jamyang Yeshi perform at MusicFest. Seeing his film and hearing his voice was an emotional experience - nowhere, I guarantee, have you heard a voice quite like this one! I am bringing Jamyang to the Valley for two performances, both by invitation only. If you are interested, please contact me. There is a lot of information on the Tara Cafe Project website about Jamyang and the project itself, which promotes and supports Tibetan musicians both inside and outside of Tibet, as well as supporting children's education projects. It is very worthwhile to have a look at the website (www.taracafeproject.ca). In a nutshell, Jamyang managed to flee Tibet (leaving his family behind), spent some years in India and by a twist of fate landed in Canada. He now lives on Vancouver Island and is building a life for himself and his family. The film he will be showing is the story of how, with the help of friends, he overcame a myriad of obstacles to be reunited with his family after years of no contact. Jamyang has graciously accepted my invitation to speak to and perform for my students at Beachcombers, and to do two evening performances on October 28 and 29. I know that his audiences will be inspired and touched, and it is my hope that Jamyang will benefit from these performances as well - both financially and from the exposure to fresh audiences that have not had the pleasure of hearing him sing before. Robin Layne returns for "Latin Rhythms Part II" !!

Those of you who participated in Robin's workshop a few months ago will attest to the fact that is was an awful lot of FUN! And exciting new rhythms were learned, too! Robin, percussionist with the amazing group Tambura Rasa, is a great teacher and everyone is welcome to join in, whether or not you participated in Part I !
Robin will be giving two workshops, in much the same format as last time:
Latin Rhythms Workshop II

Taking up where Latin Rhythms left off, this will be a dynamic workshop focused on exploring the folkloric rhythms of Cuba. You will learn the techniques of conga drumming (on your djembe, or bring a conga drum), and popular rhythms such as marcha, bomba, columbia, and guanguanco. A review of samba rhythms covered last time will also be presented. No previous experience with latin rhythms necessary, some drumming experience recommended.

Funk Grooves and Solo phrases

Learn some funky grooves that can be played with other drummers or at a jam. Learn about improvising together to create your own grooves and how to solo. Robin will share a variety of two or three part grooves for Djembe that are great for jamming. Several solo phrases will be taught to start building up a vocabulary on the drum. Gain confidence and improvise together with guidance to co-create a groove. All drummers welcome!

Date for these workshops will be October 23rd. Time, venue and cost TBA. Keep checking back here for more info in the weeks to come.

A new season of drumming is almost upon us. The following classes will be offered in African Hand Drumming, subject to sufficient registration (all classes are on Mondays, beginning September 19th):
Fallen Alders, Royston Road: Beginners 5:15 - 6:15 pm and Intermediate/Advanced 6:30 - 7:30 pm (session runs Sept 19 - Oct 24 incl Thanksgiving Monday)
Tsolum Building: Beginners 10:15 - 11:15 am and
Native Sons Hall: Intermediate/Advanced 11:45 - 12:45 pm (these two classes run Sept 19 - Oct 31, no class Oct 10)
Please register through Courtenay Recreation (250.338.1000 or 250.338.5371) for the Tsolum Building and Native Sons Hall classes. Fallen Alders drummers may register with me at the hall on the first day of the session. NB: Beginners classes will only run if a minimum of 7 people are registered.

Percussion instruments were the first musical tools people created for use in group music making. They comprise the largest family of instruments, and virtually every culture on earth has some form of drumming. People all over the world use drums to celebrate life, explore their creativity, and unite in rhythm. One of the best reasons to use drums is that they are accessible to people of all ages and abilities – the drum is a user-friendly instrument that everyone can play.
Other reasons why drumming has been important in cultures all over the world, from ancient times through to the present day, are:

This summer, take advantage of two unique opportunities to experience getting into the groove of African Hand Drumming. On August 21^stfrom 1:30 - 3:00 pm at Oceanside/Parksville (location TBA) and July 23^rd in Qualicum Bay (Lighthouse Community Hall), Monica will walk you through proper hand drumming technique and teach you at least two traditional rhythms in a workshop that will be fun for both novice drummers and those more experienced.

Two workshops through Courtenay Rec are available to drummers of all levels - these will be fun opportunities to get into the groove over the summer when there are no regular classes. Saturdays, July 9th and 23rd, 10 - 11:30 am in the Tsolum Building in Lewis Park. New rhythms for experienced players, easier parts for beginners!

As well, HealthRHYTHMS is being offered twice this summer, July 15 and August 5, 7:00 - 8:30 pm at the FIlberg Centre! This is an internationally acclaimed, research-based, recreational music making program that has demonstrated significant health benefits (eg. enhanced immune system functioning, reduced stress levels, increased killer T cell activity, etc). No experience necessary!

Drum All Day June 18th! - Rare Workshop Opportunity

Rhythm enthusiasts and drummers of every type and all ability levels will not want to miss this special event coming to the Comox Valley. Robin Layne, founding member of Jarimba, an Afro-Funk Collective, and percussionist with roots/blues artist Bocephus King and world fusion group Tambura Rasa, will be offering two exciting workshops to anyone interested in expanding their drumming repertoire or simply curious about Central and South American rhythms.

Robin has performed across China, the U.S. and Canada at jazz and folk festivals and besides freelancing with a wide range of ensembles from salsa and jazz to traditional West and South African music, he is an educator who loves sharing his passion for music and rhythm with people of all backgrounds, ages and abilities. He is on the faculty of the Sarah McLachlan Music Outreach Program, where he teaches mallets and percussion, and the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts where he accompanies dance. Robin is a graduate of the L.A. Music Academy and V.C.C. School of Music. His love for world music has taken him to Cuba where he studied with the Folclorico Nacional Ballet Cutumba and most recently to Guinea and Mali to study their traditional music and culture, funded in part by the BC Arts Council.

Join Robin after the Day For Africa fundraiser being held at the St John the Divine Church hall on June 18^th for workshops in Latin Rhythms and Samba/Funk. The Latin Rhythms workshop runs from 1:30 – 3:00 pm. In this workshop, you will learn the basics of Afro-Cuban rhythms and how to play the conga parts on djembe (or conga if you have them!). From the clave, to tumbao and rumba, you'll have a blast discovering the rhythms behind the music of Salsa. The second half of this workshop will focus on soloing concepts and how to build your rhythmical vocabulary while opening up to your inner rhythm through improvising. Aside from djembes and congas, bells, claves, shakers, or other small percussion are welcome. In the Samba Funk workshop, from 3:00 – 4:30 pm, you will be transported to the rhythms of Northern Brazil, and will learn samba patterns, samba-reggae grooves, breaks of the Batucada and a variety of funk rhythms that are great for jamming on the djembe. Bring your djembe, shakers, bells, or any other drum you might have. These will be fun, energetic sessions for players of all levels; the cost is $25/workshop or $40 for both.

A Day For Africa, June 18th

At the end of 2009, 33.3 million people were estimated to be living with HIV/AIDS. Sub-Saharan Africa is the region most affected by HIV and AIDS and is home to 68% of all people living with HIV worldwide. The question is: when faced with such staggering statistics, what can we who are blessed to live here in the beautiful Comox Valley do to help? The answer is as close as our very own, home-grown “A Day For Africa”, a community-based fundraising program that supports people affected by HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa. Donations to A Day For Africa, whether they be generated on actual volunteer “odd-job days” or at other local fundraising events, are collected and forwarded to the Stephen Lewis Foundation where they fund grassroots initiatives in countries throughout the sub-Saharan region. In short, A Day for Africa gives concerned individuals a way to respond to an urgent situation and provides people affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa with the resources they need to take care of themselves.

Inspired by a previous, very successful fundraising effort for ADFA - with a midsummer, community drum circle at the Farmer’s Market – Monica Hofer of Rhythm Spirit (http://rhythm-spirit.blogspot.com) decided this year to put the word out to fellow expressive arts facilitators that a larger event was in order. The result is an amazing collaborative effort.

On Saturday, June 18^th join Monica and her co-facilitators Robin Layne, percussionist with the gypsy/folk band “Tambura Rasa” (imported from Vancouver), Joanna Finch, a Valley favourite and vocal improviser extraordinaire, and Jade de Trey, local improvisational performer with Methuselah Dance and teacher of creative movement, as they inspire you to drum, dance and sing for Africa.

Monica, who is a well-known local African hand drumming instructor, will start the event off with a community drum circle, created in the moment and sure to have you joyfully engaged and in the groove in no time. Robin will then transport you to the rhythms of Northern Brazil, incorporating the sounds of a variety of instruments such as shakers and bells and whetting your appetite with some “Samba/Funk”. Spontaneously entering the mix, Joanna and Jade will lead you in an improvised chakra dance and “songweaving from the voice of the ancestors”, where all participants add their voice in the language of their choice and are inspired to move from their soul and find passion and joy through creative self expression.

This ADFA fundraiser takes place at the St John the Divine Church hall on 5 th Street, a venue graciously donated by Father George and his congregation, and will run from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm. Participation is by donation with all proceeds going to the Stephen Lewis Foundation via A Day for Africa. This is an “everyone welcome” event; you are encouraged to bring your own drums and rhythms instruments (a number will be available for shared use), an open mind and a generous heart – and be prepared to share in the magic of making music and moving (bare feet encouraged) in community! Mark June 18th on your calendars! Monica's annual A Day For Africa fundraiser has grown and will take place this year at the St John the Divine Church hall in Courtenay on 5th Street, starting at 11 am. Details TBA, but there will be a community drum circle (with Monica of Rhythm Spirit), followed by a Samba/Funk rhythm "appetizer" (with Robin Layne of Tambura Rasa -see next post!) and other surprises to round out the event by about 1 pm. This event is by donation and all proceeds will go to the Stephen Lewis Foundation (www.stephenlewisfoundation.org) via A Day For Africa (www.adayforafrica.com). Last year drummers and rhythm enthusiasts at the Wednesday Farmer's Market in Courtenay raised well over $300 in just one hour - this year's goal is to at least double that! Spring Drumming Classes

Last sessions before summer begin soon!
CRA (Courtenay Rec) drumming has changed time and venue: we are now meeting Mondays 11:45 - 12:45 pm at the Upper Native Sons Hall as we have outgrown the old space! There is one more class in the current session on Monday May 16th for the combined beginners/intermediate group. New session begins May 30th (no classes Victoria Day, May 23). Please sign up for your appropriate level - we will see if there are enough beginners to warrant holding a separate class in the new session.
Fallen Alders drumming is also a combined session until the fall. We meet at the hall 6:00 - 7:00 pm Monday evenings. There are two more classes in the current session, May 16 and May 23; new session begins May 30th.
Both new sessions run 5 weeks until the end of June.

Two workshops are planned for the coming months! These workshops are not only for those who wish to improve their drumming skills and for those who may be curious about various styles of drumming, they are open to anyone interested in rhythm who wants to experience first-hand the benefits and joys of drumming in a friendly circle - with master drummers "at the helm"!

Workshop #1:

FEBRUARY 27 (Sunday):    Presenting ROBIN SHACKLETON of Sylvan Temple Drums

My friend Robin is a Middle Easter drummer extraordinaire, and a talented maker of the most beautiful drums you've ever seen! Robin is back to offer another session of doumbek and frame drum instruction. Be prepared to experience being enchanted by haunting and gorgeous Middle Eastern rhythms while learning or re-visiting a different "language of the drum" from the djembe, which many of you will be used to.

Koca is my teacher/friend/mentor, master drummer from Guinea, West Africa who is an extraordinary performer and exuberant teacher and maker of not only the djembe, but a myriad of traditional African instruments. He is currently in Guinea with his partner Sasha; they will be returning in March and plan to make a stop in the Valley, which is a treat for us! Expect a different style of teaching from what you are used to, which is an experience in and of itself - come to have fun "African-style"!

DOUNDOUN (bass drums) Workshop: 1:00 - 2:00 pm (open to those who already have experience with the douns, and those who are interested in learning more about them to compliment their djembe rhythms - NB. be prepared to engage both left and right brain!)
DJEMBE Workshop: 2:15 - 3:45 pm (all levels welcome - different parts will be practiced, so you can choose to try the more challenging ones or stick with the simpler rhythms!)
DANCE Workshop: 4:00 - 5:00 pm (all levels welcome, and it's not only for the ladies! - be prepared for a fun, lively workout)

First Big Sing of the New Year!

Mark your calendars, singers of all ages, backgrounds and abilities! The first Big Sing at Creekside Commons for 2011 will be January 7th, 7:00 - approx 8:30 pm. We are a small community choir that enjoys singing in a wide range of styles, from 4-part harmony through sacred chant to folk songs from around the world - all in a rainbow of languages, sometimes even including English! This is an "everyone welcome" choir, with no audition or performing in front of audiences other than ourselves required. Solstice Drum/Potluck a Success!

Thanks to everyone who attended a very successful and spirit-filled (albeit initially postponed due to snow) Solstice Drum and Potluck event on Wednesday, December 22nd! It was lovely to see families come out, as well as old and new friends, and even some brand new rhythm enthusiasts. Not only did we drum, shake, clap and rattle this year, we also sang and danced - wow! what a joyous occasion... The rhythms, as always, were as diverse as the crowd, ranging from trance to fireworks! And of course the food was scrumptious - have I mentioned how very much I enjoy a good potluck feast?! Thanks to the generous contributions of the participants, we have been able to make a donation towards providing clean water for 5 families for 20 years in Tanzania through the wonderful organization "GlobalGiving". Looking forward to Spring Equinox!
And in the meantime, don't forget:

Solstice Celebration: Drum Circle and Potluck - bring finger food to share, positive energy, warm clothes in case we go outside (and in that case it's always nice to bring candles in a jar), and strong hands! This year I will be collecting donations towards a project that will provide micro loans, literacy and numeracy classes and in-depth agricultural, husbandry and business training to 832 low-caste mountain women in Nepal. I aim to provide 10 women with the training and supplies to start an income-generating kitchen gardens through the wonderful organisation called GlobalGiving. Check it out! www.globalgiving.org

Our next big sing will be at Creekside, Friday October 15th from 7 - 8:30 pm. By donation. All Creekies and former Lettin' Loose Choir members from Fanny Bay welcome! Negotiations are underway to have big sings out in Fanny Bay again in the near future; some former choir members have hinted that their home space may be available come November, so I will keep you posted. Creekside is willing to go south every couple of weeks, and I am hopeful that Fanny Bay choir members will make the trek in to sing with us in Courtenay, too.

We connected in rhythm for two straight hours, taking turns listening to and following eachother's beats - and by cooperating in this way, we ended up creating drum magic! Just imagine 100's of thousand of others, doing the same thing around the globe, demonstrating that peaceful interaction is possible and sending this message out to the Universe - hopefully it fell on the right ears!

Just for everyone's information:

There will be limited parking at the Tsolum on Saturday, due to the closing celebrations for the BC Seniors Games taking place around the same time that day at Simms Park. Please share rides, or drop off your drum at the Tsolum and then find parking if there is none available close by.

Join me in being part of sending an energetic, rhythmic message around the world. Once again, the 10 Billion Beats movement is encouraging drummers to get active globally and to drum together in a continuous wave over the course of two days. I have rented the Tsolum Building in Lewis Park for Saturday, September 18th from 2:00 - 4:00 pm and am inviting drummers and rhythm enthusiasts to join with me in sending a collective positive intention around the globe and out to the Universe! Our wonderful friends at Creekside Commons have once again offered their space for a Big Sing, and the folks from Creekside and Lettin' Loose choir members from Fanny Bay are invited! Classes for Beginners and Intermediate/ Advanced students begin once again September 13 at two locations: Fallen Alders classes, beginners 5:15 - 6:15 pm, intermediate/advanced 6:30 - 7:30 pm.
